:: Craft Project :: Easy Envelope Book

Hi my friends,

Today, I’m sharing with you a tutorial on how to make an envelope book, the easy way. Originally inspired by this but I kind of simplified it big time.

I inherited a stash of fancy fabric from my friend Cate. Beautiful brocade, Indian silk, velvet and embroidered silk, just to name a few. She has recently started work and moved into a new apartment so I wanted to make her something practical with those pretty fabric that she gave me. She’s mentioned before that she prefer to use small folder than a notebook so I figured an envelope book would be perfect for her!

Materials

15 envelopes
Fancy sticky tape
White glue
Scissors
Cardboard papers
Lace (optional for bookmark or you could use something else)
Elastic band (optional)
Button (optional)
Pencil
Ruler

The original envelope book from http://www.instructables.com

Stash of gorgeous silk!

1. Tape the bottom of the envelopes using fancy sticky tape

2. Repeat step 1 for the rest of the envelopes. Make sure the sides are even.

3. Tape around all the envelopes again and trim away any excess tape.

4. Tape 2 pieces of patterned card, one in the front and one at the back of the envelope book, patterned side should face the inside of the book as shown as the above.

5. Trace the outline of the book onto a cardboard, with some allowance, about 2mm around the edges. Don't forget to measure the thickness. Tape the outline using double-sided tape.

6. Cut out a piece of fabric slightly bigger than the cardboard and wrap it over the cardboard using white glue.

7. Glue the patterned card on the fabric cardboard using white glue. Add lace bookmark. Press it down firmly with your hand before allowing it to dry for about 2 hours.

8. Make an elastic band and sew a button to cover the stitching and you are done!

Inside of the book with lace bookmark.

I think the envelope book looks a little Christmasy with all that green and red from the envelopes and tape. What do you think?

it’s a cute knock off, but it won’t hold up the way the hand bound one at the instructables site will.
